What is EMP? | How You Can Prepare For An Electromagnetic Pulse Attack

In this episode of the Practical Prepper Podcast, we break down all things electromagnetic pulse, or EMP. The Host of today’s episode, Nick, speaks with Andy about how you can prepare for an EMP attack. Andy spent a decade in the marine corps and works as an infrastructure and business resilience consultant. Needless to say he knows his stuff when it comes to this topic.

An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a large burst of electromagnetic energy that can occur naturally or be caused by nuclear weapons. While many scientists believe EMPs are unlikely to create significant disruption in electricity-dependent society, some contend that these weapons may be deployed to accomplish so.

Large waves of electromagnetic energy are released by an EMP, which can function like a large moving magnet. A changing magnetic field can shift electrons in a neighboring wire, causing a current to flow. An EMP can produce destructive power spikes in any equipment within range due to such a large blast of energy.

Aside from joking about where the tin hats came from…Andy and Nick break down the 3 phases: E1-E3. Listen to learn about them and how they would affect different devices and systems. How long can the effects last? The cascading effects can last up to 3 weeks. Are you prepared to survive for 3 weeks during a power outage?

So how do you defend yourself against an EMP attack? Andy recommends checking out Empshield.com. You can buy a kit for your home and vehicle or build your own shield. They make specific computer and phone cases along with Faraday cages and bags to protect your electronics.

If you prepare with these simple defenses, you will be better off. Shielding and saving your electronics helps you have an easier time when there is an attack that inevitably leads to a power outage.

You can’t prevent a disaster, but you can certainly be prepared for it. Valley Food is offering a special deal for our podcast listeners. Enjoy 15% off your entire order when you use the code PRACTICAL15.
