Storing Water In 2016

April 15, 2019 2 min read

Water is slightly trickier to store than other emergency supplies. It needs to be replaced on a regular basis in order to maintain freshness and to avoid algae and other growths. A little planning and maintenance goes a long way, and we have some tips to help you out.

How Often Should You Replace Your Water Supply?

Normal water stored in a container should be replaced every 6 months, unless you add a water preserver. Be sure to store your water in a BPA-free container and keep it somewhere cool and out of the light. Containers that block the light will help your supply last longer.

How Much Water Should You Store?

Experts agree that each person in your household needs at least one gallon of water per day. This does not include any water for cooking, washing hands or bathing. Don’t forget to factor in household pets when calculating your water. Depending on the size of your pet, you will need at least a half-gallon of water for them each day too.

Water Purification Filter

A great way to make water storage easier is to purchase a water purification filter. Our Sport Berkey water bottles have a purification system built right inside of them. They hold 22 ounces of water at a time and the filter will last you through at least 160 refills. If you for some reason forget to change out your water supply after 6 months, you can pour it into the water bottles and filter out any impurities. You can also use any running water sources like streams and rivers without any worries. It has a storage life of 50 years, so you can leave it with your emergency supplies and not worry about it again. Purchase one for each member of your household to ensure that there is enough drinking water to go around. Water is an essential part of daily life, so be sure to make it a part of your emergency supply kit as well. Keeping a water purification filter with your supplies with keep you mind on more important things as you prepare to weather out the storm. A little preparation can make handling any situation a lot easier.
