Finding yourself without running water is always a problem, and hopefully not one that lasts too long. Running water is essential to everyday life, and learning to go without it can be more difficult than you ever imagined. In order to survive without running water, you’ll need to keep a few tips handy, and we want to outline these tips for you.
The first thing you’ll absolutely need to keep in mind is to conserve, and no water may be wasted. When eating, use disposable plates, napkins, and utensils if possible, as taking care of dishes after a meal wastes water that could otherwise be used for more important purposes. Additionally, avoid flushing toilets too often and only save your flushes for solids. A good rule of thumb to follow is to flush your solids each time, but your liquids only once per day, and don’t place toilet paper into the toilet.
If you’re at home, and you suspect you may lose running water due to a storm or other circumstances, you’ll also want to stock up on water. Fill your bathtubs, your sinks, and every bucket or large water container you can find, and keep your water on hand in case you need to go a long span of time without running water present. In cases of buckets, make sure your buckets are ones you can carry and maneuver if necessary, as a very large bucket, when filled with water, becomes very heavy and difficult to move.
Whether you’re at home or surviving outdoors, you’ll also want to have some sort of water filtration system you can use. There are many to choose from, and many which work quite well, so your choice depends on your preferences and your personal circumstances. Your water filtration system will allow you to use outside water if necessary, or your saved water should it become contaminated.
While we’ve been conditioned for so long to life with running water, we can live without it if we know what to do. Surviving without running water simply takes some conservative thinking and smart survival tips, and you can learn to live comfortably whether running water is present or not.
