Food Storage 101: Where And How Long To Keep Your Favorite FoodsWhen planning out an emergency food supply, it is important to pay attention to how long your favorite foods can last on a shelf. Some foods have a longer shelf life than others and do really well in an emergency food kit. Others need to be replaced more often. Let’s take a look at some of the things to consider when you are storing foods for future use.

Mark all your foods with the purchase date. This will help you keep track of what you added to your stash and when. Most traditional foods can last in an emergency store for anywhere between 3 months and a year before they need to be used or rotated out. An easy way to keep track of this is by marking everything with colored stickers. Use one color for each month when the food is going to need to be replaced, so that way you can use it before it goes to waste, and then replace it.

Cool Storage

Keep out of extreme temperatures. One of the worst places to store your emergency food supply is a garage. The temperature fluctuates a lot in a garage, which is not good for your emergency food storage. Foods that are being kept need to be maintained at a cool temperature to promote minimal spoilage. A basement or a room in your house that stays fairly constant and is not damp or in direct sunlight is preferable.

How To Store Water

Water storage can be tricky. You can’t just store water in any old container. It needs to be stored in a container that is designed for long-term use. Water bottles that you purchase at teh store have a fairly short shelf-life and need to be replaced frequently. Plastic storage containers can leach harmful chemicals into your water supply over time, and may not be the best option. You can purchase a water storage device that is meant for storing water in case of an emergency, but you’ll still need to remember to change the water it it frequently.

A great idea to have on hand is a water filter. It can take any form of water and turn it into drinkable water. If for some reason you have forgotten to change your water supply, but you are stuck, the water filter can save your life. Just tuck it away with your emergency supplies to be sure that you are prepared for anything.
