Best Nuts For Food StorageNuts present an interesting challenge for long-term food storage, since they do have a naturally fairly long shelf life, but they can also become rancid easily, due to their high fat content. Further, raw nuts can contain higher nutrients, but can also be infected with insects that will damage surrounding nuts.

However, nuts are also vitally important for long-term food storage and emergency food kits, since they are the most prolific form of protein that can be stored over time and provide a highly balanced nutrient delivery to the person eating them. This can also make it important to understand which nuts are actually better for long-term food storage, and why.

• Pistachios - these are important because nutritionally, they are the most complete of all the nuts. In shell nuts that are brine soaked can add an extra level of preservation from the salt, but in shell or shelled nuts should be kept in airtight containers, in a cool, dry place.

• Almonds - these are next in line in terms of nutritional content, and almonds also contain vital enzymes that aid in digestion and immune response. However, roasted walnuts will contain less of these enzymes, but will store better. Unshelled nuts will last the longest, and this can also be best for people who do want raw almonds.

• Peanuts - these are also incredibly well balanced for nutrients, and relatively easy to store. In shell nuts that have been roasted can be found in bulk, and need only to be stored in a cool and dry place. Shelled peanuts can be more volatile, and it is important to look for dry roasted, so that there is no excess oil. These should be stored in the fridge nonetheless.

Along with nuts, seeds like pumpkin and sunflower can also be important to grow and collect, not only for the nutrients, but also for the fact that they can provide cooking oils. While other nuts can also be good to have in long-term food storage, the above are the most complete in nutrition, and easiest to store.
