Disinfecting: You can use an alcohol that has a high level of alcohol content that is 70 proof (or higher!) as a disinfectant. Be aware that this can actually hurt the good tissue around a wound, so it should be a last resort for an open wound. However, this works great on surfaces or tools where there may be cross-contamination.
Bartering: You may not drink, but there are plenty of people that do! Use it as a bartering tool, since alcohol may be in short supply if there is a disaster and in any stressful situation, alcohol will be in high demand.
Growing Plants: You’ll need a renewable food (even if you have freeze dried food)source if there ends up being a long-term disaster. You can use beer as a fertilizer for plants. Just poor a little bit of flat beer on the dirt around the plants in your garden and watch the plants flourish!
Cleaning Mold: Vodka can be used to clean up mold. Place the vodka in a spray bottle and spray onto the moldy area. Let it sit for fifteen minutes before scrubbing with a brush. This works great for the caulking or grouted areas since you can get in deep with an old toothbrush to scrub it away.
Deodorize Fabric: You may end up wearing the same clothing for more than a day without washing it. Place Vodka in a spray bottle and spritz your clothing to neutralize the “I’ve worn this way to long” smell. This method also works well on furniture you aren’t able to wash easily. Add in a couple drops of your favorite essential oil to change it up a bit.
Fire Starter: A fire will be essential for survival for warmth, cooking, boiling water, etc. Those that are struggling to get a fire started can soak wood, cloth, or pretty much anything that is flammable in alcohol before lighting it. It will help the item catch fire more easily.
Making Extracts: You can actually make your own extracts for cooking. Using a mason jar, fill with your desired flavor, such as vanilla beans, orange peel, mint leaves, walnuts, etc. Cover with vodka and let sit for a couple of days to a month depending on how strong you want the flavor to be. Then strain out the particulates and use like you would a store-bought extract! Think of the normalcy this could bring to your family to be able to make a cake with vanilla frosting in a disaster.
This is just a sampling of the many ways you can use alcohol during an emergency without actually drinking it! What other ways do you use alcohol?
As always, make sure you keep any alcohol you decide to keep on hand out of reach of children or better yet, locked up, to prevent children from accidentally consuming it. And always drink and use alcohol responsibly.
